Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham has also backed plans for a referee decision review system similar to that used in the NFL. He believes this will to add excitement to Super Rugby and give coaches involvement in decisions.

Larkham flew to the US on Friday as part of the club's new "USA Brumbies" program, which is intended to help it break into the American market.

Larkham hopes to visit the the Giants, who most recently won the Super Bowl in 2007 and 2011, and the New York Jets (1968) during his trip, which will take in coaching clinics and sessions at universities.

Super Rugby's governing body, SANZAR, is reportedly considering adopting a review system from 2016 to eliminate errors by referees and to give coaches a chance to challenge decisions.

It is yet to be decided whether captains or coaches will be able to lodge challenges.

NFL coaches can challenge two decisions a game (and a third if the first two succeed) by throwing a red flag onto the field within a limited time.

"I'm all for anything that is going to make the game more exciting, and I think that's exactly what the decision review will do," Larkham said.

"It adds another element to the game for coaches and they can get more involved in the game.

"When you're coaching, you can make substitutions but you can't really control the game. This would give a bit of power to the coaches.

"They just have to be careful because too many stoppages can be detrimental to the entertainment. But if they do it correctly, it can be another element that people will enjoy."

Brumbies scrum coach Dan Palmer and retired winger Clyde Rathbone are in the US hosting coaching clinics and are visiting universities across the country.

The Brumbies plan to set up an academy system based at Arizona State University, where potential Super Rugby recruits will train before possibly trying out in Australia.

Larkham will start his US mission in New Jersey and hopes to link with the Giants, led by champion quarterback Eli Manning. He will also visit the West Point military academy in New York state.

Forbes ranks the Giants as the 10th most valuable sporting team in the world, valuing the franchise at $US2.1 billion ($2.3 billion). The team attracts more than 80,000 fans to home games.

The Giants will spend $US130 million on player salaries this year.

Manning, 33, will become a free agent in 2016 when his six-year, $US97.5 million deal ends.

The figures dwarf the Brumbies' salary cap of $5 million, which is spread between 32 players.

"We're going to try to get to a couple of NFL franchises," Larkham said.

"The universities have good set-ups over there, as well, so I think we can pick up good ideas.

"We'll look at the NFL training – their facilities will be totally different and we'll look at the way they coach. If we can get behind the scenes we can pick up little things to help us get better."

Rathbone and Palmer were guest speakers at Google on Wednesday and former Wallaby Palmer will host a scrum session at universities.

The Brumbies will be able to evaluate the untapped talent at universities across America.

It's part of an academy relationship the Brumbies have set up with international teams, including the Papua New Guinea national side and Japanese team Kubota Spears.

Arizona State University has more than 60,000 students, which is the largest student population in the US, and is in division one of the National Collegiate Athletic Association competitions.
