Trevallyn's Lewis Hendey, 21, was killed last year after being hit from behind by a ute while cycling along the West Tamar Highway near Riverside.

The driver Timothy Wayne Yole today entered a plea of guilty through his lawyer Adrian Hall in Launceston Magistrates Court.

Family of both Yole and Mr Hendey packed the court room for the brief appearance.

Prosecutor Natalie Clark said the victim's mother wished to read a victim impact statement to the court.

Mr Hall informed Magistrate Reg Marron that his client now lived in Western Australia and was due to return there tomorrow.

Mr Marron adjourned the matter until this afternoon. 

Mr Hendey, a talented rower, died instantly after being hit while cycling with his best friend along the popular bike route on December 29.

At the time the pair were riding north towards Rosevears, between Riverside and Legana, opposite the Tamar wetlands. 

Mr Hendey, a popular and well-known member of the Tamar Rowing Club, was farewelled on January 3 at a funeral service attended by 500 people at the Tailrace Convention Centre.

Mr Hendey's death led to renewed calls for a one-metre clearance law between cyclists and motorists, which the former the state government announced it would trial.

The measure will now be considered under a new road safety plan announced by the Liberals last week.
