The original agenda item detailed the need to remove nine poplar trees on the north-western footpath of Regent Square due to the hazard they presented in severe weather.
Two community members spoke against the motion and Deputy Mayor Bridget Archer amended it to reflect the community's concerns.
Cr Archer's successful motion will see the council seek further advice from a qualified person about the potential to prune the trees to mitigate risk to the community.
Cr Tim Cory and Cr Heather Barwick agreed with the amended motion.
"Despite the somewhat inclement weather we've been having trees have been falling all over George Town, but I'm yet to see these fall," Cr Cory said.
"We should look at some serious cutting back before we lop them down."
Cr Stephen Geale spoke against the amendment, arguing it was a waste of resources to employ another expert to do the work again.
"Why are we double dipping?" he said.
The area will be fenced off while further assessment is undertaken.
