The council has been investigating resource-sharing with its neighbour municipality for several years.
Yesterday's motion had the council commit to further discussions and consideration of opportunities to share with Dorset.
Mayor Roger Broomhall commended the decision.
``This is most definitely a step in the right direction if we can work in co-operation with neighbouring councils and where we can identify some savings or any savings.''
Cr Heather Barwick said the council would be at risk of amalgamation if it did not start investigating opportunities to share resources with other councils.
