Prospect High School grade 8, 9 and 10 students have been hard at work creating the fictional world for the WotOpera program.
The national initiative sees students spend four one-day workshops - a total of 21 hours - writing and composing their own operas.
Students are also in charge of set design and creation and three Launceston schools will perform their operas next week.
Prospect High School drama teacher Rachael Hawkins explained the school's participants had come up with the plotline alone.
"It's in a high school called B'Lender High School, where food goes to school," she said.
"It's essentially a fight between Sassy Strawberry and Pineapple to win prom queen.
"It was one of those themes that everyone seemed to have something in common with."
WotOpera operations manager Stuart Loone said it was wonderful to see students take ownership of the program.
"It's all their ideas, it's all their own music and it's a joy to see them through that process," he said.
"You virtually never see people not only write their own work but compose all the music to it.
"It's an indicator of what they can achieve not only creatively but in life."
Launceston Church Grammar School and Queechy High School will also perform original works at the performance night on August 26.
It will be performed at Launceston's Princess Theatre from 7pm. Tickets are available from theatrenorth.com.au/wotopera-launceston/
