Fairfax Tasmania general manager Phil Leersen has accepted a senior leadership position with the University of Tasmania.

Mr Leersen, 42., will leave the company on October 3 to take up a position as general manager of the Australian Maritime College in Launceston.

He has been with the company for 24 years, including 15 years at senior management level.

''I developed a passion for education while completing an MBA in administration. It taught me the significance and importance of the University of Tasmania, and specifically the AMC faculty in Northern Tasmania,'' Mr Leersen said.

He paid tribute to the reformist Tasmanian operations of Fairfax, saying it was responsible for producing the first phone App for the business, the first newspaper eEdition, while winning many awards at a national level.

''I am immensely proud of what our staff in Tasmania have achieved, in a very competitive media environment,'' Mr Leersen said.
