Awakening at 4:30am with anticipation, my brother Connor and I downed a hot drink, threw some wood in the back of the cruiser and headed down to the Kalangadoo boat ramp to get the fire roaring for the fishing open season breakfast!
After heading back home to hook up the boat and grab the gear, waiting at the ramp was the breaky crew.
Connor and I then went for a lap around Kalangadoo Bay; Connor had something on for a few seconds but had dropped it.
Connor's lure of choice was a Gulp Pumpkin seed, and mine was a #115 Tassie Devil Loftys Banana.
We then headed back in for some more bacon and eggs and a warm by the fire, by this stage a few more people had turned up and were heading out fishing too.
Not to miss out on all the fun (as we couldn’t drink tea and eat bacon all day) Connor and I set off up towards the eastern side of the island.
With no luck from the bay to the island, we made the choice of heading up the Snowy River, we got up near the top end, Connors rod went off, and it was a decent fish!
Playing it all the way to the edge of the boat, I went to net it for him, and the brown, around three pounds, got off - oh well, at least we knew they were there.
We then drifted for another half hour or so and I had a rainbow on, it did a half-hearted jump and threw the hooks.
''Not to worry, just a fish,'' Connor said.
Heading back to the ramp, as it was getting a little chilly out on the water, we headed back to thank Todd and Janet (Lambert) for putting on a great barbecue breakfast for us all.
We then headed back home for a bit of lunch, drowning our sorrows with some doughnuts.
After lunch we headed back out determined to get one.
We decided to trawl up to the point where Connor had changed yet another lure, and then all of a sudden I had another on, a good one too!
I picked the rod up and started winding, but I dropped him close to the boat and his tail come out of the water.
He would have been a good solid three-pound brownie - I hooked it on one of the new Tassie Devil colours, #120 ‘Neon Galaxia”.
With no more luck we decided to call it quits for the day.
It was a great start to the season, although we didn’t all catch a fish, we had a couple on, and we had a great day.
I even got to put some names to faces off the fishing forums and it was great meeting everyone.
Hope everyone had a great season’s opening day and wish everyone a successful season!
Cheers,
Samuel
