According to the Australian Bureau of Statistic's Motor Vehicle Census for 2014, released this morning, Tasmania has 861 registered vehicles for every 1000 residents.
Western Australia had the second highest, with 840 vehicles to 1000 people.
ABS Director of Transport Statistics Sybile McKeown said there was an increase of 26 vehicles per 1000 residents Australia-wide since 2009, totaling a national figure of 756 vehicles to 1000 residents.
"Tasmania recorded the largest increase over the past five years compared with the other states and territories, an increase of 63 vehicles per 1000 residents," Ms McKeown said.
Tasmania also recorded the highest figure in the census last year.
