Although some concerns have been raised by interstate hospitality businesses due to the potential loss of tips and people walking out without paying the bar tab, Alchemy Bar and Restaurant duty manager Jordan Yates said yesterday the move away from a signature made it a lot easier for staff.
"It's so much easier for us, as it's really a time issue - especially when it's busy," Mr Yates said.
"If you do 30 or 40 transactions in an hour, it can just take up so much, it's difficult."
Mr Yates said he found only a few older people continued to sign for transactions.
Birchalls managing director Graeme Tilley said he expected little to change.
Birchalls said the vast majority of customers already used their pin number for transactions.
He said some people continued to sign, however it was usually determined by the card company.
Mr Tilley said although their businesses were still waiting for the payWAVE machines to be delivered, he believed it was much more convenient for the customer.
He said as banks accept liability for deceptive transactions, such as in the case of where a card has been stolen, customers won't lose money.
Launceston Chamber of Commerce executive director Maree Tetlow said business people were welcoming the move as it put the onus back on the cardholder.
At the moment it was up to front of house staff to verify that the person presenting the bank card was the actual cardholder, so this method made it "significantly more secure" she said.
