TYPICAL mainland narcissism and ignorance was blinding this week when Tasmania was left off the Australian map printed on the national women's Commonwealth Games swimsuits.

Was I surprised? Hardly. Were Tasmanians surprised? Not at all.
It's not the first time little Tassie has been disregarded by the Australian Commonwealth Games Association and our mainland counterparts.
The Australian Institute of Sport has left us off its reformed logo, however, it doesn't mind gloating about the success of Tasmanian athletes such as Amy Cure.
Tasmania has seven athletes competing in Glasgow - and all deserve recognition.
Some people may think Tasmanians are being picky, but all too often we're treated with minimal respect.
The design oversight brought back memories of when my late grandfather and I where visiting relatives in Sydney several years ago.
"Some people may think Tasmanians are being picky, but all too often we're treated with minimal respect."
Our final day was spent at the Wyong Leagues Club where we were sampling a few beers and having a successful day on the punt. When it was time to leave, my grandfather was unsure if we could collect our winnings back home or was it a completely different system?
So he asked the barman.
The smart alec replied: I didn't know you had electricity down it Tassie, let alone a TAB - thinking he was Jerry Seinfeld.
If one insult wasn't enough, the cocky servant tried to be novel and proceeded to ask both of us where our scars were!
I wonder if he treats all his customers with the same smugness or did he just think we were a sub- species of his superior self because we were from the island state?
I'm sure most Tasmanians have a similar story they could share.
In wake of the snub, Premier Will Hodgman and Bass Liberal MHR Andrew Nikolic were among others who have expressed condemnation and want the association and federal government to apologise.
Palmer United Party Senator Jacqui Lambie is after $5 million in compensation to fund a tourism campaign and one writer even suggested Tasmania should secede from Australia!
Tasmanians don't want an meaningless apology, compensation from the powers that be or to form its own republic - we just want lasting respect and recognition from our equals abroad.
