The brainchild of Launceston Church Grammar School head of visual art Paul Snell sends students from grade 9 upwards on a photographic scavenger hunt.

Mr Snell said the open-ended competition drew a variety of entries with many different interpretations of the 20 words provided.

He said SNAP was open to students with anything from a mobile phone camera to a DSLR.

``The competition evolved out of projects I gave my own students and it developed into something bigger,'' Mr Snell said at last night's awards ceremony.

``It's gained a bit of a following from some schools. It provides a fairly contained structure for students.''

Mr Snell said the annual competition continued to grow.

``Last year we had 150 people - in the first year we had 50 people and we thought that was great,'' he said.

Mr Snell thanked Booth Trust, Southern Cross and Bok Print for their support.
