The works, originally scheduled to finish at the end of this month, will now not be completed until mid-September.
An Australia Post spokeswoman said that the delay was due to the unique nature of the works.
``We are expecting to finalise the clock tower works and remove the scaffolding by the end of August, with finalisation of all works by mid-September,'' she said.
All external building surfaces will be repainted and resurfaced, the interior will be repainted and the roof and gutters will be replaced.
The building has been on the Commonwealth Heritage List since 2004.
The post office will remain operational throughout the works.
