Evandale Light Railway members on Sunday ran their miniature trains in Morven Park, but are gearing up for a big July.

Railway president Peter Crowder said a $10 family ticket was on offer, no matter how many children.

The main attraction is a miniature XPT train powered by a nine horsepower engine with little bench seats that takes the young and young-at-heart around the 700-metre track.

Also operating at the weekend was a coal- burning replica of an English tank locomotive.

Legana train enthusiast Arch Robinson ran the locomotive, which he bought complete from a Hobart enthusiast.

But he has since built a second locomotive that took eight years of part- time work, and has a third in the works.

His first locomotive, named Gaylene after his late wife, weighs about 80kilograms and can carry himself and two or three others.

And because he sits in front, he cops the coal cinders from the chimney and oil that sprays from the drive mechanism - and says it is all part of the experience.

But he stresses passengers avoid that experience, as they sit further back.

The railway will be open from 10am to 1.30pm each Sunday in July.
