Now there is much more joy attached to it, with the Brisbane Americana-folk artist naming his new album February.
Rennie-Hynes, who admits he bases a lot of his songwriting on relationships that have ended, symbolically named the album February as some of the worst of that occurred in that month.
While not all the songs are related to this, it is a theme to his work.
"I guess I will see February (the month) as a positive now," he told X-static.
"When I was thinking of album names, it was pretty easy, as a lot of songs do relate back to that time of my life.
"The first single, Erin, was written a day or two after a relationship finished for good.
"It had been an on-and-off for three years, and I wrote that after I finally realised it was over.
"It was rainy and gloomy that day, and the song came out of that.
"I think she's heard it, but I haven't spoken to her for a while."
GIG FACTS
WHO: Josh Rennie-Hynes
WHERE: Fresh on Charles, Launceston
WHEN: Saturday, from 7pm.
Rennie-Hynes described the album, the first time he has worked with a producer (Shane Nicholson), as a big moment in his music career.
"It is a step up from my last mini- album, which was pretty stripped- back acoustic sort of stuff," he said.
"This one has more instrumentation and a lot more polish.
"When you first release something, you're not expecting much from it, you just want to get it out there.
"But with these songs, I had eight months to write some really quality songs, so from that aspect it made me really apply myself to my songs and focus on every structure of the songs.
"In general, I really just felt like I grew just writing those songs, and I really just grew as a writer."
The album will be released the day of his Hobart show (tomorrow), before he plays at Launceston's Fresh the next night.
"I really like to connect with my audience," he said.
"It will be very personal, very intimate and definitely an escape for people."
Rennie-Hynes will play at Hobart's Grand Poobah tomorrow night.
