Matthew James Linton appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court in an after-hours session this morning.
The 34-year-old was charged with the murder of Sean Leslie Trigg, who was stabbed at a Bridgewater house in the state's South before 1am on Friday.
The deceased man, of St Marys, was 48.
Mr Linton has been remanded in custody and will reappear in court on Monday.
The ABC had reported that Mr Linton was also charged with common assault for allegedly punching a woman in the face.
Police said yesterday that the two men were known to each other.
A third man, aged 39, allegedly tried to intervene in an altercation between the two men and suffered minor injuries.
Police and paramedics tried to resuscitate Mr Trigg, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mr Linton also suffered knife wounds in the altercation.
