A WORLD Cup winner's medal wasn't enough to secure Launceston hockey player Tim Deavin a spot at the Commonwealth Games.

Just a week after the Kookaburras' latest global triumph, the squad was named for next month's tournament in Glasgow and despite high hopes of significant Tasmanian representation, Deavin and fellow Launceston product Nick Budgeon missed out, leaving only Hobart's Eddie Ockenden.
Deavin had been a late call-up for the World Cup in The Netherlands after teammate Glenn Simpson withdrew injured.
However, the 29-year-old made the most of his chance, scoring against Spain and providing his customary robust presence across the backline.
Ockenden, 27, was similarly influential in The Hague, scoring a couple of trademark tomahawk strikes as Ric Charlesworth's team swept all before them, winning all seven games by comfortable margins and thrashing the hosts 6-1 in the final.
Ockenden's selection takes Tasmania's involvement in the Commonwealth Games to seven and follows last week's withdrawal of 400-metre hurdler Tristan Thomas.
