CAMERON Grant has a big hat to fill.
The talented grade 11 student stepped onto Launceston's Princess Theatre stage, alongside 160 others yesterday, for Launceston College's first technical rehearsal of its musical Seussical .
It was the first time the cast and crew had been in the theatre together preparing for its five-show season, which opens on Wednesday.
Grant, who plays the lead role of the Cat in the Hat, said it was daunting but exciting to be in the theatre.
``It's a bit daunting coming from the drama room, but it's really exciting,'' he said.
``Because I've had so little experience (in the theatre), it's a huge shock and I'm amazed at the incredible set and everything.''
Seussical is the second show Grant has performed in. Last year it was PCYC Youth Theatre's production of The Music Man .
He said his version of the Cat in the Hat was different to Mike Myer's portrayal in the 2003 Cat in the Hat movie.
``He's mischievous and he tells the story, but in his own way,'' Grant said.
Seussical is based on a variety of books by Dr Seuss including The Cat in the Hat , Horton Hears a Who! and The One Feather Tail of Gertrude McFuzz .
Director Cheyne Mitchell said even if a Dr Seuss character wasn't written in the script, they'd tried to give it an appearance.
``If you're looking out, you might see Cindy Lou arrive and the Lorax,'' Mitchell said.
``The great thing about this show is even if you've never heard a song from Seussical , whether you're four years old or 94-year-old, you know Dr Seuss's characters.
``It's a really touching story about standing up for what you believe in, even when everyone else tells you you're wrong.''
