West Tamar Deputy Mayor Christina Holmdahl and council planner Michael Purves were at the Legana shopping centre yesterday to talk to shoppers about proposed changes.

The Legana Structure Plan includes a vision for commercial, residential and community development.

Three precincts will accommodate the suburb's anticipated population growth: former orchid land at Bulman's Brook (700 residential lots), slopes beneath Grindelwald west of Legana's centre (450 lots), and dairy farmland in the suburb's southern precinct (1510 lots).

The town centre plan includes allowances for an existing supermarket upgrade, a discount department store, a cinema, gym, and a range of retail outlets, and professional, commercial and healthcare services.

A boulevard near the centre would be created for traffic and for weekend markets.

The plan has provision for two schools and a sports precinct.

Cr Holmdahl said the ambition was to make Legana both a gateway and a service centre to the West Tamar region.

West Tamar Mayor Barry Easther said the plan was perhaps the council's most significant planning work for the region's future.

The plans will open to community consultation for four weeks from June 11 with an information session at the Windsor Community Precinct from 7pm.
