Emergency services initially responded to a two-vehicle crash in the south-bound lanes involving a Ford Focus and Mitsubishi Pajero about 5.10pm.
A woman was treated for minor injuries and both vehicles were extensively damaged and had to be towed away.
Traffic was reduced to one lane and congested as far back as Wellington Street amid rush-hour traffic along Launceston's main exit route.
Police said there were two further minor incidents in the meantime due to driver inattention.
Six cars in total were damaged from the three crashes.
Police had urged motorists to use an alternative route or delay their travel until the scene was cleared about 6pm.
