Council development services director Michael Stretton, in a council policy meeting yesterday, said the council was likely to put out an expression of interest for Segway operation in City Park, Royal Park, the Seaport boardwalk and the Inveresk precinct.
He said operation in other areas may be considered in the future.
The council has been approached by two operators keen to establish the two-wheeled vehicles in the city.
The idea is to be formally brought to aldermen for determination.
Segway use is illegal on public streets in Tasmania, but can be used for commercial purposes if approved by the Infrastructure Department.
Segway tours can only be found in the North on private land in Hollybank, but exist in public spaces in Perth, Sydney and Hobart.
Mr Stretton said the use of Segways in only approved areas would be monitored by council officers after aldermen Rob Soward and Albert van Zetten raised concerns over policing and regulation.
He said the operator would be required to undertake a comprehensive risk management plan of each route after Alderman Rosemary Armitage raised a safety issue with the vehicles operating around toddlers in City Park.
The council will also investigate public liability insurance, undertake community consultation, and develop a code of conduct for tour guides and riders.
