A 12-year-old girl was kidnapped and sexually assaulted yesterday by a man driving a van at Latrobe, police say.

Police said the girl walking alone at south Latrobe when she was dragged in to a dark grey people-mover by man aged between 20 to 30.
The incident occurred yesterday about 4pm.
The vehicle was driven to Old Deloraine Road at Latrobe where the man stopped on the side of the gravel road and sexually assaulted the girl.
The man then drove to Shale Road, Latrobe where the child was released.
The vehicle is believed to be a people mover type or similar.
It had a child car seat or restraint fitted to one of the rear seats.
``We would like to hear from anyone who observed either this type of vehicle or a man fitting the description in the Latrobe area, particularly in the vicinity of Old Deloraine Road or Shale Road Latrobe, around 4 pm on Tuesday,'' Detective Inspector Rob Gunton.
