A town crier at 9am yesterday heralded the start of painting for the nine finalists vying for prizes at the International Mural Fest this week.
Next Saturday, one of the finalists will win the $15,000 Inder first prize or the $5000 World of Marbles $5000 runner-up prize, the $2000 Slaters Country Store visitors' choice award or $1000 Nova Design and Print people's choice award.
Contestants are creating murals on outdoor boards in Mural Park.
Sheffield artist Fereleth Lee, her daughter Jacqueline LaCava and Jacqueline's boyfriend Tom Powlay, both from Sydney, have teamed up to produce a work called Then and Now: A Celebration .
Ms LaCava said a vivid childhood memory was her mother asking her what she wanted in her bedroom and then creating colourful murals on the walls based on the answer.
The daughter is now a graphic designer and credits her creative abilities partly to her mother's influence, and says it is great to be working beside her.
Lee says their work is about learning from the extinction of the Tasmanian tiger and ensuring the Tasmanian devil and other threatened species survive.
The four-time mural fest entrant says drawing the outline on the mural board, based on the submitted miniature painting, was the hardest part of the process, and it was a fun but busy week.
``Time goes quickly,'' she said.
``Every time you think `I will not get it done in time', but I do. It's a lot of fun, it's a lovely atmosphere and we help each other.''
