Titmus went into the girls' 12-13 years 200-metre freestyle final as the fastest qualifier and won in a time of 2:06.18 which is a Tasmanian record.
``I couldn't believe it when I looked up at the scoreboard,'' said the 13-year-old, who is coached by Derek Taylor.
``Thank you to my family and to Derek for all they have done, I don't think it's sunk in yet.''
Titmus, whose mother Robyn won a national athletics gold medal at under-16 level, is one of only a handful of Tasmanian girls to have won an event at these championships and the first in at least a decade.
She also has another eight events to contest this week.
Between them, Launceston Aquatic, Riverside and South Esk have supplied half the Tasmanian team of 18 competing at Sydney Olympic Park.
Jacob Vincent, of Hobart Aquatic, also secured a gold medal for the state, winning the boys' 15 year 1500m.
