In a close game all day, the Magpies led by two points at quarter time, the Tigers by six at the main break with scores tied up at three-quarter time.
But Devonport kicked 6.10 to 3.4 in the final term to run out comfortable winners 16.17 (113) to 13.11 (89).
Beau Sharman booted four goals for the Magpies and Kade Pitchford three to be among their best players with Brad Symmons and Sam Hess other good contributors.
Luke Graham kicked three for the Tigers with Marcus Gardner their best player.
LAUDERDALE got its State League season off to a winning start with a big 63-point victory over competition newcomer Hobart City in their round 1 clash at Lauderdale yesterday.
The Southern Bombers started the better and were always in control despite a third-quarter fightback by Hobart City which cut a 52-point half-time deficit to 20 points at the last change.
But the home side steadied to boot 10 goals to two in the final quarter to run out easy winners 21.18 (144) to 11.13 (79).
Michael Cassidy kicked seven goals for Lauderdale and Ben Halton four while Brodie Shade booted three for Hobart City with Jesse Wells their best player.
In the twilight game, Clarence defeated Glenorchy by 25 points, 20.9 (129) to 14.10 (94).
