Album explores biblical character

A FIERY zealot or someone who never existed?

Launceston musician Daniel Townsend has explored biblical figure Judas in  Iscariot , an album of 10 songs to be released next week.

Townsend labelled the collection an ``accidental album''.

``It's a fascinating story with important people,'' he said.

``Just because it features Joseph, Jesus, Mary and Judas doesn't mean it's Christian.''

Townsend said it was interesting to explore the different schools of thought around Judas, and eventually come to his own understanding.

``Judas was a city boy, a bit of an outsider, and possibly more intellectual than Jesus's other disciples,'' Townsend said.

``It would have been very alienating to be around all those guys who went to school together and grew up together, which most people can relate to.

``Rather than being greedy, selfish and nasty, he's very obedient and does what he's asked to do - I'm not so convinced he thought he did a radical thing.''

Gospel, hymns and original songs feature on  Iscariot .
