Whincup claimed his third pole position of the weekend by recording a 50.9676 fastest lap in the 20-minute qualifying session, the first car to lap under 51 seconds for the event.
His Red Bull teammate Craig Lowndes was second quickest with a 51.0845 with Volvo driver Scott McLaughlin third fastest with a 51.1803 and Erebus Mercedes driver Will Davison rounding out the second row with his lap of 51.1817.
Whincup will be chasing a clean sweep of victories in the final race but he and Lowndes would be expected to give each other a bit more room in the race to the first corner after the Red Bull teammates had a coming together in Saturday's race much to the displeasure of team boss Roland Dane.
