Born in Devonport and raised in Hobart attending government schools, I undertook tertiary studies at the University of Tasmania to obtain a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Chemistry. I was offered a scholarship to undertake postgraduate research towards a Doctor of Philosophy, which I gladly accepted due to my love for science.

After completing these studies I worked for 14 years as an industrial chemist and technical specialist in the manufacture and development of aluminium powders with Ecka Granules Australia in the Bell Bay industrial precinct.
During this time, my awareness of government and politics grew until I made the decision to enter the democratic process and run for parliament – first in the 2013 Federal election as an Independent for Senate, now as an independent for Bass.
What drives me is quite simple – ever since a child, I have had a strong sense of justice and particularly of injustice wherever it may be found and whoever it may affect. Perhaps because I was a late developer and a bit of a nerd, and also having a simple childhood made me aware of the social divide with the haves and have-nots.
With a family background of hard work, with immigrant grand-parents on my mother’s side, it was a matter of improve and improve some more. I know the benefit of carefully planned work and setting goals. It is this understanding that I know can be applied to the whole of Tasmania to see this state ‘unlocked’ allowing creativity and communities to flourish.
