Mr O'Byrne called the police union leader yesterday to express his condemnation about death threats made towards Mr Allen's wife.

As reported in The Examiner, an anonymous caller first phoned Mr Allen's wife on Wednesday morning threatening to kill her if he did not ``back off''.

Mr O'Byrne said any intimidation or threatening behaviour towards anyone was ``simply unacceptable'' and that such behaviour had no place in Tasmania's political process or society.

``We are lucky to live in a robust democratic society where everyone can freely express views on matters of politics and public policy,'' he said.

``I have called and spoken with Mr Allen today, and offered my support to him and his wife.

``I would encourage anyone with information about these matters to contact Tasmania Police immediately.''

The union has long refused to meet Mr O'Byrne to discuss police matters, after the association moved a no-confidence motion in the minister in October 2012 following cuts to the force.

The pair met informally in early 2013, but have not met formally since Mr Allen was elected in October 2012.
