The Tasmanian Turf Club and Cityprom hosted the 150th cup's barrier draw in the central business district before fashionista Christopher Horne compered the catwalk show - featuring six fashion houses.
Club chairwoman Alison Archer said ticket sales were strong several days out with more reserved car spaces sold this year than last.
Model Ella Booth, 17, said she expected to see more suits and a lot fewer dresses at the cup on Wednesday.
"The two-piece suits and really bright colours are gorgeous," she said.
"The more classic dresses, a bit longer down to the knee, will also be about.
"There will be a mixture of colours with a lot of creams, natural colours, bright pink and green suits with some florals."
Ella said people should take their time in making a decision on what to wear.
She said it was a good idea to take a jacket that matched your outfit and shoes that were easy to walk in.
