Joan was educated at The Friends’ School, Hobart. She is married to Rod and has two adult children. Joan developed and ran her own state-wide investment and financial advice businesses. In addition, Joan and Rod have run successful beef properties.
As a fourth generation Coaster Joan knows the issues and people of the North West and West Coasts. She is committed to directly addressing the crisis facing the region due to job losses and lack of investment.
She founded ‘Unlock Tasmania’ in 2012 to counter the vocal minority seeking to lock-up resources and lock locals out of vast areas of Tasmania. Joan rallied thousands of people to voice their support for jobs from the sensible development in mining, re-development of the sustainable forest industries, an expansion in agriculture, access to our reserves and tracks and expanding manufacturing with the purpose of creating jobs and growing the economy in Braddon. Joan believes that three pillars of community must be equally strong - a three-way balance between: jobs and economy, community & social needs and the environment.
Joan has held a number of company directorships and is an active member of Rotary. In 2013 Joan chaired the very successful Rotary fund-raising project ‘Give Toby Wheels’.
“I stand for jobs, for growth and to ensure there is a future here for people. This means supporting small business, supporting front-line services, supporting our natural strengths and getting governments out of the way of people creating that future.”
