Jeremy William Shea, 33, pleaded guilty to one count of common assault on January 10 at Kings Meadows.
CCTV footage from the Meadow Mews shopping centre captured Shea running at his ex-partner's son and pushing him.
As a result the boy was "violently thrown back" falling hard on the ground.
Fellow shoppers intervened such was the violent nature of the incident, Launceston Magistrate Simon Brown said yesterday.
Shea's actions were prompted by the child's rough behaviour with his own 18-month old girl, the court heard.
"(It was) utterly indefensible and had the potential to cause the child serious injury," Mr Brown said.
He sentenced Shea, who was convicted of assaulting a pregnant woman last year, to one month jail.
