The Tamar Island Wetlands Centre is found a mere 10 minutes from the centre of town and is swarming with wildlife from invertebrates to large raptors.
On an average day, more than 20 species of birds can be spotted.
On Sunday, the Tamar Island Wetlands Centre will host a range of activities designed to educate the next generation on the importance of caring for, and maintaining, our wetlands.
``Everything doesn't arrive packed in cellophane,'' volunteer Justin Youl said.
``On days like this we are able to impart knowledge to the children and can say, `this is beautiful and it will only stay this way if you care for it, so you have to have a vision for the future and the future is you'.''
On Sunday, Ms Youl will be engaging children with activities including making binoculars and wind socks.
Artist Dan Villiers will also be on site showcasing his artwork, which is heavily inspired by the wetlands and its wildlife, as well as demonstrating his drawing and painting skills.
``World Wetlands Day is a great opportunity to visit the wetlands and explore this beautiful natural habitat,'' Parks and Wildlife Service Northern region acting manager Stan Matuszek said.
