State leads nation's prison costs

Tasmania spends more per day in operating costs housing prisoners than anywhere in Australia.

The latest Productivity Commission report on government services found Tasmania spent more than $300 a day per inmate in operating expenditure for 2012-13.

The national average was just over $200.

The total cost, including capital expenditure, for Tasmanian inmates per day was nearly $400 compared to a national average of $300.

The ACT spent the most on prisoners per day overall at more than $400.
