Woman, cop assaulted

A 29-year-old Taroona

man has been charged with assaulting a woman and a police officer.

Police say the officer was off-duty when he intervened in a physical fight between a man and a woman on Hampton Road, Battery Point, about 8pm on Friday.

Police allege that the man and the 30-year-old woman were known to each other and were arguing as the police inspector approached.

It is alleged that the man was gripping the woman's throat.

''He was punched in the face before he grappled the man to the ground. The man and woman then fled,” he said.

The officer received a concussion, cuts and bruises and will not return to active duty for at least one week.

The man was detained in custody to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court later today.

Police ask anyone who saw the man and woman arguing in Hampton Road, or the assault on the police officer, is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
