The 27-year-old driver stopped to speak to two men after an item was thrown at his car just after midnight yesterday.
Launceston CIB acting Detective Inspector Jonathan Higgins said one man walked up and cut the driver with a long-bladed knife as he tried to get out of his car.
The Kings Meadows driver was taken to Launceston General Hospital where he underwent surgery for damage to his hand tendons.
The parties were not known to each other.
"This kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable," Detective Higgins said yesterday.
"We take a very dim view of it and are taking it extremely seriously."
The incident occurred at the intersection of Hobart Road and Nunamina Avenue, Kings Meadows.
The two males are also believed to have damaged a turning car shortly after this incident in the same area. Launceston CIB is appealing for witnesses who may have seen two males loitering around the Hobart Road area. One man is believed to have been wearing a red T-shirt and to have been carrying a long-bladed knife.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Launceston CIB on 63363910 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
