The Railton man, 29, was riding in a trailer being towed by a Mitsubishi Pajero 4WD wagon on Lovetts Flat Road, when he was thrown from the trailer about 4.15pm yesterday.
He sustained serious head injuries and is being treated in the Royal Hobart Hospital.
Police attended the scene and investigations are continuing.
Latrobe Sergeant Martin Parker said it appeared that speed and alcohol were not factors in the incident.
He warned people of the dangers of travelling in trailers, boats, and load-carrying areas of vehicles where there are no restraints or safety devices and the areas were not designed for carrying people.
