TASMANIA is home to the two best young plasterers in Australia and New Zealand.
Launceston's Anton La Palombara and Burnie's Ashley Grossworth teamed up to win the Association of Wall and Ceiling Industries' apprenticeship challenge at its 68th annual conference in Hobart on Wednesday night.
The pair finished in the top two at the Tasmanian championships last month and were up against teams from each Australian state and New Zealand.
``We had to build a wishing well over three days and at the end of the three days it was judged and whoever's well was the neatest and to the correct measurements was the winner,'' Mr La Palombara, 19, said yesterday.
``There were some pretty good plasterers in the competition so to win is fantastic.''
Mr La Palombara, a former Prospect High School student, is a third-year apprentice with Transform Plastering.
About 300 people at the conference raised more than $50,000 for Make-A-Wish Australia.
