ABOUT 900 children pulled on their basketball shoes for the Northern Tasmanian Primary School Championships in Launceston yesterday.
Northern primary schools fielded 102 teams in the annual competition organised by Devils Basketball Club and held at the Silverdome and Elphin Sports Centre.
Devils president Simon Barrett said the pupils played 40 minute games across the two- day tournament.
"We run grade groups of 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and the divide them up into A-grade, B-grade and C-grade," Bennett said.
"The teams are in pools and play off against each other and in the A-grade pool there will be a grand final, within the B-grade and C-grade the top of the table will win.
"It is an opportunity for the kids to participate, to see if they like the sport and to take it up at club level and participate further.
"It also gives them an opportunity to try a new sport."
All finals will take place today at Elphin Sports Centre.
