OLYMPIC gold medal-winning swimmer Michael Klim has dived head first into the inaugural Cataract Gorge Challenge.
Organisers have announced that the popular athlete will be an ambassador of the multi-sport event on Sunday, October 27, as well as taking part in the eight-kilometre running leg.
Since retiring from competitive swimming, Klim has shown a keen interest in adventure sport, competing in the Marysville to Melbourne multisport challenge in 2011 and the Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge in 2007, when he tackled the Gorge in a range of methods.
Organiser Cade Smith said he was thrilled to have the 36-year-old Victorian competing.
``His reputation as a world-class athlete and multisport enthusiast makes him the perfect ambassador for the Launceston Cataract Challenge, which aims to promote healthy, active living to the wider community,'' Smith said.
Spectators will be able to watch Klim compete in the run leg plus the dash for cash kayak battle on the First Basin at 3.30pm.
Additionally, organisers are hoping to get the triple Olympian on the ropes course in the morning when a team of local identities will be taking on the high-flying challenges over the South Esk near Kings Bridge.
Klim isn't the only elite athlete competing, with Olympic distance cross-country mountain biker Rowena Fry and Freycinet Challenge champion Ben Mather also among the field.
``Having athletes of this calibre competing in the challenge is not only a great boost for the event but for Launceston in general,'' Smith added.
``While the challenge is attracting an experienced field, it has been designed to be accessible to newcomers to the sport and those who just want to compete in one of the five legs.''
Smith, and co-founder Ian Ferrier, said they were grateful for the support they had received from the multisport and business communities in their first year.
