Murchison MLC Ruth Forrest pledged to bring the issue back to the Legislative Council following elections in May which changed the Council's composition and the federal election last month which clarified the federal government's approach.
However, a number of other issues are taking precedence on the parliamentary papers, including a briefing on the World Health Organisation's approach to smoking organised by Windermere MLC Ivan Dean.
Preceding the marriage debate, three briefings will take place after lunch, including from the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute and Guy Barnett's Save Marriage Coalition.
Whether the debate makes it to the parliamentary floor today is dependent on those briefings.
If it's not brought on today, the debate must wait until the council sits again on October 29.
The bill has already passed the House of Assembly.
