NERVES, excited whispers and the harmony of about 300 voices filled Launceston's Albert Hall last night.
Pupils from independent, Catholic and public primary schools last night joined for Singfest.
St Finn Barr's Catholic School music teacher and Singfest committee member Daniel Townsend said the choral celebration was the result of hours of practice.
"I guess what's exciting is that a bunch of schools are involved who haven't been before," he said.
"So much practice goes into each individual school."
More than 20 schools participated in the event, which continues tonight.
Mr Townsend said the performance was a labour of love.
"Music teachers love teaching music and they're doing this not because they're being paid, but because they love doing it."
Genres ranging from pop songs to folk will be performed with both individual performances and group vocal arrangements on display.
Singfest will be held tonight at the Albert Hall from 6.30pm to 8pm. Tickets are $7.50, visit theatrenorth.com.au.
