Council aldermen yesterday voted to release a concept of the redevelopment by landscape architects Oculus and design firm Cumulus Studio for consultation.

The concept includes new parklands, a large playground, a network of walking and cycling trails with a boardwalk to link Kings Wharf, Seaport and the Inveresk precinct, and community facilities like a large playground, picnic and barbecue facilities, and a sound shell and seating.

Alderman Tony Peck said the plan should be treated as simply a concept for now as it could completely change after community input.

He said the redevelopment would have to take maintenance obligations into account so it did not become a cost burden to the council in future years.

The council's North Bank committee has already identified several projects for the large site that stretches from Tamar Street to the Tamar estuary.

The $7.8 million redevelopment is to receive $6 million in federal funding and is expected to create 39 jobs.

The redevelopment will tie in with developer Errol Stewart's new Silos hotel, bar and restaurant.

Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the redevelopment was a good opportunity for the public to speak out about what they would like to see happen on North Bank.

``This is extremely exciting for Launceston and we want to make it a place for the people,'' he said.
