A high level panel chaired by former federal resources minister Martin Ferguson will look at challenges facing Tasmania's privately-owned hardwood plantation industry.
Deputy Premier Bryan Green announced the formation of the panel, which will also include Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association's Jan Davis, in Parliament this morning.
Private plantation landowners have not been paid rent since timber company Gunns collapsed last year.
Mr Green said he had been unable to act earlier because of legal matters.
The panel's first task will be to assess the size of the plantation growing on private land, before identifying ways the government can provide assistance.
"We need to understand what our plantation resource is," Mr Green said.
