QUEECHY High School advanced through to the Hawks Cup state football final after a thrilling three- point victory over Riverside High in the NHSSA final.
In a game described as one of the best in NHSSA history, Queechy established an 18-point half-time lead through the hard running of Mitch Viney, and Tom Hardwicke helped provide opportunities up front, where Jayden Stanley capitalised with four majors.
Riverside dominated the third quarter through Zac Kilby and Ryan Sheppard and took the lead.
With many players falling victim to cramp, the fourth quarter was a battle that saw Queechy score the only major to hold on for victory.
"It was an unbelievable win, where boys from both teams had to dig deep," Queechy coach Brendan Poke said.
"I'm very proud of each and every player who represented Queechy to get its first premiership in 12 years."
Mitch Viney was awarded the Matthew Westfield MVP medal.
Queechy will face St Virgils from the South and Marist College of the North-West in the Hawks Cup.
