A ROCHERLEA man whose negligent driving killed one of his passengers has avoided further immediate jail time.
Magistrate Tim Hill convicted and sentenced Tristan Gilbert, 32, in the Launceston Magistrates Court today.
Mr Hill jailed Gilbert for six months, wholly suspended for two years upon his release from jail on other matters.
Gilbert pleaded guilty on July 29 to having caused the death of another person by negligent driving, having failed to stop after a crash, speeding, having failed to ensure a passenger was wearing a seatbelt and having driven with bald tyres.
Gilbert lost control of his turbo-charged Nissan Skyline on February 6, 2012, and slammed into a gum tree on the East Tamar Highway in Launceston.
Passenger Troy Dolbey, 30, of Waverley, died in hospital from his injuries.
