JOHN Widdowson has been involved with the George Town Lions Club for more than 30 years.
He is the current treasurer but has served the club in many capacities including president, secretary and vice-president.
``I was asked by a chap I knew pretty well if I'd like to join, and I went to a dinner meeting in 1979 and have been a member ever since,'' Mr Widdowson said.
``Our main activity is the Lions Country Music Festival, which we run once a year at George Town.
``It involves mostly local performers, and we're into our fifth year now.
``The club has a committee to organise it, but it's mainly driven by Dorothy Sweet.
``When it happens, all club members get involved.''
The 2012 festival was a joint winner of the Event of the Year award in the George Town Australia Day awards.
``We also raise funds from Christmas cake sales, our Christmas stocking and other things.''
Club projects over the years have included the Mount George Lookout and barbecue facilities and showers at East and Lagoon beaches.
Causes supported include Daffodil Day and fund-raising for cystic fibrosis, prostate cancer and heart disease.
The George Town born and bred Mr Widdowson's automotive workshop is a well-known business.
The former George Town councillor said he was ably assisted in his work as treasurer by his wife, Elaine.
