A steady stream of strategic spinners, strippers and sinkers is expected to flow into Brumbys Creek for September's 2013 Tasmanian Trout Expo.
Catching these river monsters is only half the challenge, as discovered last week by Cressy District High School grade 8 students Mathew Hayward and Xavier Cherdron.
Trout expo president Richard Goss said the fish, donated annually by Petuna Seafoods' Cressy hatchery, helped bring excitement to the town.
"We get a couple of thousand through the town over the weekend and, once you add up all the parents and hangers-on from the school competition, you're looking at a couple of hundred through on Monday as well," Mr Goss said.
Petuna hatchery manager Shaun Slevec said the company was proud to sponsor the community- driven event each year.
"I drive past the creek on my way to and from work every day and, even after the trout expo, you'll see 15 to 20 people there fishing, which is what it's all about," Mr Slevec said.
He said Atlantic salmon and ocean trout up to five kilograms in size would be let loose into Brumbys Creek for the expo's September 21 launch.
Entry for adults is $10 a day or $15 for the weekend, juniors (under 14) are $5 a day or $8 for the weekend.
Tickets are available from C.H. Smith Marine, Petrarch's Bookshop, Mitre 10 Longford, Cressy Newsagency or at the gate.
