FOUR Tasmanian devils will head to San Diego Zoo in the US at the end of October, Environment Minister Brian Wightman announced today.
Another four will be sent to Albuquerque Biopark, and four to New Zealand's Wellington Zoo later in the year, under a pilot program announced in June by Mr Wightman.
The international program will raise awareness of the devils' plight, as well as much-needed funds to contribute to the cost of maintaining the insurance population each year.
There are already 550 devils living in zoos and wildlife parks across Australia.
Fifteen healthy devils were released onto Maria Island off the state's East Coast in November. In April, six of the eight female devils were found to be carrying young in their pouches.
