MLC’s vote

August 27 2013 - 9:35am

ROSEVEARS independent MLC Kerry Finch complained bitterly after the Liberal Party endorsed me to contest his seat of Rosevears in next May’s Upper House elections. In his own words, he claims that my endorsement makes him out to be a ‘‘Green toady’’ or a ‘‘Labor toady’’. Mr Finch’s performance will be judged by the way he votes in Parliament. Recently, he voted against an amendment moved by the Liberals to Labor’s AntiDiscrimination Bill which would have provided an exemption to allow private Christian Schools in Tasmania to be able to control their own enrolment processes. That’s hardly a difficult proposition, almost every jurisdiction in the free world allows parents to set up and support faith-based private education, as a basic human right. Mr Finch’s vote saw that right directly denied to a number of schools in his own electorate including the large Launceston Christian School. Socialists are philosophically opposed to parental choice in schools. But the Labor-Greens government can only implement poor policy if they get the support of sufficient MLCs who agree with their bad laws. I am proud to be able to offer an experienced alternative of practical conservatism in public policy considerations.
