CLAIMS from Tasmanian Liberals that the government is half- funding a court case against itself are false, Environment Minister Brian Wightman said yesterday.
Opposition mining spokesman Adam Brooks yesterday hit out at Minister for Primary Industries Bryan Green with claims Mr Green was "bank-rolling" the federal court case against Venture Minerals' mine near Tullah.
"It has been revealed that Bryan Green has signed off on funding for the Environmental Defenders Office, which is providing the legal advice for the Tarkine National Coalition's challenge against the Venture Minerals proposed mine on the West Coast," Mr Brooks said.
"Bryan Green should be ashamed and embarrassed that he is effectively bank-rolling an anti- mining legal campaign at a time when Tasmanians desperately need jobs."
Mr Wightman said Mr Brooks's claims were incorrect.
"Funding for the EDO was first provided in 1997 by the Groom Liberal government," Mr Wightman said.
"The Tasmanian EDO has received a small annual sum of $8750 from the Tasmanian government (Justice and DPIPWE provide $4375 each) since 1997."
